I just orderd 5 of 16f877.

now what cinde of communication would you use . I was experimenting whit rs232 and to 16f877a(just had them lying around)in simulation it worked(vnet) it woked ok but the problem is the hardwear I dont know how to select the pins of the chip so thet it workes like it ...

I will stick to my version of mach....and alsow I think that usb devices are to slow for things like this(experience from pokeays)maby I am wrong.
The only reason I am doing thic control unit(besides from learning) is This is my diploma I want something more on my machine.

I'm planing to build a control panel whit a lcd 4*20 controled by a pic 16f877a this pic will be just for controling the lcd, 2 led, 6 butons. in the contrl cabinet will be a 2nd pic aloso a 16f877a this pic will be "the brains" behinde all the inputs and ...

i have a student version of flowcode (

i am using a 16f877a pic whit an 4mhz osc. (HS in setings )

the problem is whit flowcode I cant compile anithing but the listed things Ihave tried all not listed comonents and the same error aperes.

I have figured something out aboute rs232 because i realy couldnt make real sents of your post..sory

now I have a new problem my flowcode says that this version of flowcode can compile code or the folowing components only:
LED
LEDarray
led7seg
led7seg4
LCDDisplay
SWITCH
SWITCHbank
ADC
kaypad
PWM ...

like I said I want to communicate between at least 2 pic 16f877a how can I do that.
I was thinking about rs232 ??

One pic will be like an control panel whit input botuns, lcd, lots of LED....
the other will be for outputs and inputs like operating valves, motors,......

It looks like that there wase something wrong in the setup of the flowcode

Now I have tryed everything thet was sayed

checking wires
tried a new crystal (16. ....Mhz)
conect the lcd to all ports
tried whit a 2nd pic
whit a 2nd lcd
the rw wirew has conected to gnd 100%

it's not working

the lcd is connected folowing

in flowcode I'v set to use port B
0,1,2,3,4,5

lcd
pin1..gnd
pin2..5v (direct NO resistor)
pin3..10k potenciometer
pin4..rs pin 6 on pic
pin5..gnd (direct NO resistor)
pin6..pin5 pic
pin7,8,9,10..not conected..in air
pin11..pin 0 pic
pin12..pin1 pic
pin13..pin 2 pic ...

I have tried to test all the wires thet conect the pic to lcd and ar ok.
the pin1 of the pic is conected to +5v ...

I am testing all diferebt combnations of delays.
I alsow tried to conect the lcd via pul up resistors (10kohm). Pin no 1 is alsow conected to +5v via 10 k resistor on the pin 1 is alsow 5v.
ther is one led blincking all the time on the pin 7 of B port the elc is conected to pins 1,2,3,4,5 port B.

I am testing the outputs of the pic whit an osciloskop where the lcd should be conected. results:

when the pic is powerd the outputs data1, data2 "1" data3, data4 "0" RS "1" enable "0"
no oscillations no nothing just constant +5v output

does this mean something to ...

it's conected like you said.

When I max the contrast is it normal that only the 2nd and the 4th line are black the 1st and 3rd line are blanck.

I'v tested the setup of the pic whit a flashing led and everithing is ok.

is there any thing else I need to setup in flowcode
