Using EB006 with 16F883

This target device can fail to program. This is not a fault with EB006 or PPP.
If you use a 12V supply, although it states on DS41287 document from microchip VPP is 12V max, this is clearly not the case with 16F883, but is fine for a majority of other devices.
PICkit 2 programmers are also affected, since the one I have only produces 12V on VPP line.
Using this programmer in HVP for ICSP, programming only randomly worked, and kept getting device not detected. Using a different ICSP programmer, device was programmed sucsefully 100% of the time. I don’t know what other devices are affected, so if programming fails, please bear this in mind.
Conclusion use recommended PSU which produces a voltage higher than 12V.
I was using a stabilized 12V supply, which is fine for a majority of devices, just not 16F883!
I believe this topic has been covered elsewhere, but I’d thought I would share my experience.
Thank you.

Hi Medelec,

The EB006 and HP488 boards have a bridge rectifier fitted so that there is a slight voltage drop from the PSU to the programming voltage. As you say most devices are happy with slightly under 12V but the 16F883 must be a bit more picky about its programming voltage.

Hello Ben.
The point is was trying to make (badly :P ) is I would not recommend a 12V stabilised supply, as Vout from these are 12V and could not be up to the job. PICkit2 o/p is 12V exatly and that's not even up to the job. If however a 12V unregulated supply is used, then o/p would be at least 14V DC so would be up to the job. I was not using a PSU recommend by matrix (it does state unregulated in EB006 data sheet) that’s why I had the issue, and that’s why it is not the fault of Eb006. If I did use the recommended 12V unregulated supply, then there would not have been an issue… My mistake and don't want other people to make same mistake.
