programming an Atmel SOIC chip

Post by Alberta2012 »

Hi Everyone,

I have done some design using an ATTiny85, but I want to reduce my board size; I ordered a couple of ATTiny85 with an SOIC package

How in hell am I supposed to program them ??

I ordered a SOIC8 to DIP adapter from Ebay, but I can't figure out how to install the SOIC chip on the adapter .....

item that I bought: (http://www.ebay.com/itm/SOIC-SOP8-to-DI ... 968wt_1105)

I'm normally using a STK500 to program my chips.... Is there a board that exist that would allow me to program my SOIC chip directly that someone has had success with ????

You just flip the top and put the chip in I think - notice the springs on the side of the adapter…

@Sparkoids: That's what I thought, but the **** chip won't fit in !

When you push down the top portion, some kind of "gripper" raise (which in theory should make room for the chip), but there no way to seat the chip in place ....looks like the chip is actually wider that the socket itself .....

maybe I've got a "bad one"....

as anyone ever had luck with one of these ?

how do you program your SOIC chip ?

Hi folks,

Might have found an answer: SOIC package is a standard that is 150 mils wide ...or 208 mils wide....

I found this on Wikipedia:
"SOIC actually refers to at least two different package standards. The EIAJ SOIC body is approximately 5.3 mm (0.21 in) wide while the JEDEC SOIC body is approximately 3.8 mm (0.15 in) wide. The EIAJ packages are also thicker and slightly longer. Otherwise the packages are similar."

Atmel's ATTIny85 is a 208 mils package....

I guess the adapter that I bought, even if not mentioned, must have been a 150 mils.... Just bought another one, which clearly mention being 208 mils....

I'll post my result when I get it !

The one thing that I like about standards, is that there are so many of them , that you can pick the one that matches your need !!

Hi everyone,

quick follow up on that issue: If you get the SOIC 208 mils wide, the ATTIny 85 WILL FIT on it....

Hi
Although this might not fit your uc, i find these brilliant for flashing in circuit

I would probably go down the in circuit serial programming route via the AVRISPvII.

This is a 6-wire interface you can add to any PCB your designing allowing you to program the surface mount device without having to remove the chip or use adapters.

The schematic for the Atmel ICSP header can be seen on page 5 of the datasheet for our EB019 AVR programmers.
