Flowcode7 and ARM

Post by PicoPuls »

Hi
I am just trying to overview ARM
Flowcode supports approx 19 ARM chips
and the Mikroe compiler supports 895 ARM chips

The only thing that is strange is that no chip in the Flowcode list is supported by Mikroe
and no chip in the Mikroe list is supported by Flowcode
Why?

From Wikipedia:
With over 50 billion ARM processors produced, ARM is the most widely used instruction set architecture
in terms of quantity produced

Does Matrix plan to support more ARM chips in the future ?
Or are they already compatible somehow ?
Can anyone explain

The entire lists are below

Best regards
Bengt

Re: Flowcode7 and ARM

Post by QMESAR »

I am just trying to overview ARM
Flowcode supports approx 19 ARM chips
and the Mikroe compiler supports 895 ARM chips
Well in my opinion the answer to this is very easy ,MATRIX build up their support for devices as resources allows them and in the process what is supported gets support when needed unlike the mikroElectronika
stuff ,They started with the ARM compilers 3 years ago and since that time none of the other compilers which has numerous bugs and problems get fixed or updated
The dsPIC Compilers of mikroE was updated nearly 3 years ago ,PIC32 compilers were updated 2 years ago and the PIC compiler not even so yes they support 895 ARM devices but in the process neglected all their other users such as ATMEL and PIC
They jumped on the ARM band wagon with the hope to increase there turn over but in my view they are loosing long time Microchip users in this process as the support for ARM takes all their available resources

Any case this is a Flow code Forum and not the place to discuss mikroE tools and development board ,
As I saw a number of post from you regarding mikroE boards and Compilers what are you exactly looking for in FC or what do you want to achieve with FC just curious

Thank you QMESAR for very interesting info

My basic view is that Flowcode is a revolutionary approach to programming microprocessors.
Simplifying technology this way is perhaps one of the greatest things that happened to microprocessing
and electronics. :D

The number of chips suppored is not that important from my point of view,
the Flowcode idea itself is the real big thing. In my world Flowcode is the center of gravity, no doubt.

On the PIC side it is really impressing how many chips Flowcode is supporting. Flowcode supports far more chips
than you can develop on the Matrix hardware and e-blocks.

That's where mikroe and other 3 parts vendor comes in. They have experimental boards that seem to work
with Flowcode to fill the gap. I am now working with dsPIC33EP512MU810 that Flowcode supports in a great way
and where Mikroe has the hardware that Matrix is still missing. Combining building blocks this way is powerful
and speeds up development.

Regarding ARM, I am so far just curious what is going on. No project in sight so far.
In principle, It is far better to have 5 chips supported with perfection than 1000 supported chips with bugs.

Best regards
Bengt

Well you will b surprised how many PIC users there are in the world :D in 2013 Microcip was awarded by Samsung as their top supplier with 10 billion PIC's to Samsung alone
:D I personlay does not use ARM at all I use 8 bit ,16 bit and PIC32 as my devices and in this way I can just use code written for a dsPIC or PIC24 directly to a 32 bit chip(PIC32)(with very limited changes such as the configuration) as the peripherals are exactly the same on both which speed development up and time to market which means money in my pocket :D as this allows me to standardize my Code modules and their reuse in other projects an allows me to standardize my development hardware chain regardless processing power the project needs be it 8 bit or 16 or 32 bit and FC7 supports a large number of PIC32 devices including the MZ family with double flouting point engine and 200 Mhz there is nothing that ARM has that I can not do with a PIC32 and in many case in my opinion even better ,I have no need for any ARM products as everything that in this Embedded world is supported by some device from Microchip and with FC7 most of these devices are supported :D

My expectation is that after this huge step MATRIX took with the road including the XC compilers they will add probably STM to the ARM device support hang in there it will happen :D thinking of it most likely Add more ATMEL devices as ATMEL belongs to Microchip and MATRIX is an official 3rd party tool supplier for Microchip
this is just my thinking and not speaking on behalf of MATRIX

Have good time

We are looking to improve coverage of ARM support in Flowcode int he near future. Does anyone have any particular request for chips/ranges?

Steve,

We have gotten quite far with the STM32 range and it looks very promising. Still a long way to go with this in terms of generating the chip definition files and testing the CAL but hopefully we should be able to offer these devices in the near future.

Steve,

Lots of ARM discussions over the years, from my experience I would rank the requirement for the ranges like this.

1) STM32
2) NXP
3) Atmel

In my experience talking with other developers it seems Benj is spot on
(1) STM
(2) NXP
(3) ATMEL

Good news!

I might be wrong, but from my perspective right now
Flowcode / Matrix offers the best and most innovative development approach in the world
and Mikroe offers the best experimental boards http://www.mikroe.com/easymx-pro/stm32/
It has everything on board and I love the connectivity and overview
So my suggestion for a priority chip development is STM32F107VCT6

All parts will win on picking and combining the optimal pieces.

Matrix also has an excellent and unique range of e-blocks
and it would be great with a simple, small and cheap adapter
from pin header to sub9

In my humble opinion,
Best regards
Bengt

I answered in August : So my suggestion for a priority chip development is STM32F107VCT6

Further reading of datasheets indicate:
Tiva seems to be the same as Stellaris but Tiva has added features like motion control PWM's and
Quadature Encoders and USB On-The-Go

Would TM4C129XNCZAD be a better suggestion ?

Hi All

I think the FLOWCODE the ARM core; NXP, STM processor family in Texas should support.
