Problems with HP488 /PIC16F84
Problems with HP488 /PIC16F84
I recently purchased a HP488 verion 3 board. I have managed to program a PIC1684 with a simple test program that sequentially turns on the onboard port A & PORT B LEDs (program part of the Matrix ASM for PICMicro course - tutorial TUTA3.asm), but noticed that the LB5 LED was not turning on while the program was executing. I suspected a problem with the PIC and replaced it with a new one and downloaded the same program, but now when the program is downloaded to the PIC and executes, all it does is switch on all PORTB LEDs continuously except for LB5, i.e. the sequential switching on of the LEDs has stopped. Nothing is output to PORT A. I have changed the PIC with 2 other new PICs, but the same thing happens.
LB5 does not switch on no matter which PIC I use. However, when I press SB5, LB5 turns on. I am using a 13.5V external power supply.
Could there be a problem with the HP488?

Hello
Please check that the jumpers just to the left of the LCD screen are all set to the I/O position. If this doesn't work or the jumpers are already positioned correctly then what kind of 84 are you using. EG 16F84 16F84A etc.

Yes, the jumpers are set to I/O and I am using a PIC16F84A.
I actually managed to figure out what the problem was. I had the osscillator switches set to RC/FAST. When I changed it to RC/SLOW and turned potentiometer to fully anti-clockwise, it solved the problem. Even LB5 is now working!! Should have followed the instructions at the top of the program code in the first place.

Yes, you will need to download and install the "PPP" programmer utility (which includes the driver for our hardware). It can be found on this page:

Re: Problems with HP488 /PIC16F84
I still can't compile the program, because I kept on receiving a message "USB cable is not connected", I have checked the device manager, the hardware was detected. Than I download the PPP v3, still same problem. When I use the flow code, the message remains the same showing the usb is not connected. Please help, i ve been working for it for almost 2 weeks, with trial and error, hoping I can solve the problem. But until now it still doesn't work...

ia64 is for Itanium. x86 should be the correct one.

Re: Problems with HP488 /PIC16F84
Hi, when i select dpins_x86, the message appear as" YOU HAVE RUN THE 64-BIT VERSION OF DPInst.exe on this machine". Than |I choose dpinst_ia64.exe. Than the message appears as " PPP\dpinst_ia64.exe is valid, but is for a machine type other than the current machine" I really not undrstand...

Sorry, you need dpins_amd64.exe for 64 bit systems. (For Intel CPUs as well)

Hello,
As kersing says, the amd64 dpinst should be used for most 64 bit machines, the other is for Itanium cpus only.
