ESP8266 Target Device

Post by BenR »

Hello,

I've noticed that Espressif have now officially supported Windows with their ESP8266 IDF. I've managed to install it and get it running. They say eventually it will be supported in the ESP32 IDF but give no time scale as to when this will be.

Before I dedicate some time to this just trying to gauge the interest for supporting the ESP8266 devices as part of the ESP chip pack. It would be an additional toolchain installation but looks like it should be doable.

So who would like to see this device in Flowcode?

If the esp8266 is still in manufacture (and looks to be) then it would be a useful extra.
I suspect that many would prefer better support for newer esp32 variants - even though throwing more horsepower at a problem isn't always the right thing to do?

Me me me. These are cheap to get the hold of and can add extra functionality to an existing circuit. I've recently purchased a few for that reason

Hi Ben

I would certainly be interested.

I find the modules extremely useful as they allow me to give pretty much any uC cost effective connectivity, but I mostly interact via "AT" as this allows me more or less full control of the module. I can change pretty much every parameter via such to suit my application.

I do see applications whereby the module, although limited in features compared to modest PICs (as an example) could be useful.

Hi Ben,
Not sure if you wanted the don't think so answers. For a hobby the price difference and capabilities between those and the ESP32 WROOM is so small. Also it is mind boggling all the different models available so I just stick to the one.

Many thanks for the feedback, gives me some good food for thought on what is required.

Hi Ben!

Definitely a great idea Ben and another benefit in FC. But, please as long as it does not in any way disturb or damage the other devices and components in the Flowcode ;)

Not bad BenR, but the ESP8266 is outdated.

The ESP32 is old too, there are variants of the ESP32 that would be nicer to have as a supported chip in FC10?

Also different requested components seem to me to be more urgent and valuable? (like the Bluetooth master component :D )

Newer esp32 variants should now be included and supported. As for the Bluetooth master I'll have a look at that as that should be fairly simple to do.

Really? Would be the best thing since bread came sliced!! :D

The S2,S3,C2,C3,C6,H2 are supported? Or some of them?

They aren't announced on https://flowcode.co.uk/embedded/targets ... #ChipTable yet?
Do we need to install another version of the IDF?
