Uart polling protocol

Any information/tutorial on customizing a uart polling protocol?
Using an 18F47Q10 to talk to other18F47Q10 or chips of the same family on a two wire 24vdc system.
Inspired by the addresable Firelite two wire Fire Alarm system for an automatic watering system.
There will be a master 18F47Q10 that polls other pics on the two wire 24vdc loop.
